Eileen Layman’s 7th grade Media Skills class has been working with EBSCO’s Points of View, a research database provided by the State Library of New Jersey. Students were taught how to research topical issues that are presented in a Point/Counterpoint format. Students chose their topics and conducted research to prove their thesis. They then countered information presented from the opposing side and drew conclusions based on their research. Students debated over the use of drones, increasing American boots on the ground in Afghanistan and Syria, the legitimacy of government spying by NSA, and home schooling, among other hot button issues. The debates helped the students sharpen their research skills to locate factual information rather than delving into opinions.
