BELS recently hosted the workshop “Building and Enhancing Your School Library Media Center Website” on Oct 1st at the Northern Valley Regional HS Demarest. Participants learned how to create a brand new media center website that is user friendly and attractive using Google Sites. Krista Welz and Courtney Reinfried, media specialists from North Bergen and Demarest High Schools, guided BELS members and guest media specialists on how to set up a media center site and add many useful features and enhancements to make it dynamic and engaging for students and faculty. Our presenters demonstrated the use of Google Apps, such as Slides and Forms as well as embedded animated slideshows showcasing new books and databases. Participants were shown new ways to use Google Calendar and how faculty would be able to schedule library reservations on their own. Planning the layout and structure of the website was also discussed, including various features such as announcements, featured web tools, databases, research, and teacher sections. This hands-on workshop enabled everyone to use the tips immediately on their own website or start from scratch, discovering how to take full advantage of Google Apps and its collaborative features and integration for everyday library use.
